What You Should Know About Choosing Painting Tools

When doing a paint job, people focus on which paint to get.

They forget that the tools used for painting are just as important as the paint. Without the right tools, a paint job would still not look good even if you use the most expensive paint that you can afford.

But how does one go about picking the right paint brush and other painting tools? It can be confusing when you’re surrounded by all kinds of brushes and other tools, when you don’t have a clear idea of what you should be getting.

Here are some of the things that you should know when choosing a paint brush and other tools for painting.

Brush Bristles

Paint brushes can be classified by the kind of bristles that they have. Made from animal hairs, natural bristles are more suitable for oil-based paints.

Synthetic bristles, on the other hand, are made from polyester and are best for latex paints. Synthetic bristles are stiffer and are better for latex paints. Blended bristles are made from nylon and polyester, which is also good with latex paints.

Brush Size

Picking the right brush size can be tricky since there are a lot of sizes to choose from. It’s always a good idea to pick a brush size that is smaller than the surface that you will be working on.

Here is a simple guide that you can use for picking the size of the brush that you want to use:

  • For windows and trims, use one-inch to two-inch brushes.
  • For shelves and doors, use three-inch brushes.
  • For large surfaces, use four-inch brushes.

Still, the most important rule to follow when picking a  brush size is how comfortable you are when using it.

Brush Shape

The bristles of the brushes are also available in different shapes. For example, a square trim brush is ideal for flat surfaces to get an even result.  While a brush with angled bristles will be ideal for painting edges.

Now, if you will be painting a small area, you may have to use what’s known as a chisel trim brush. It comes with a narrow head that makes it ideal for painting straight line.

The Right Roller

Rollers are needed when you are painting large surfaces. Like brushes, there are all kinds of rollers that are available.

A roller with a short pile is great for flat surfaces, while one with a medium-sized pile is good for surfaces that are slightly textured.

There are two kinds of rollers that you can choose from, the readily built and the caged.

These are just a few things that you should know when you’re choosing painting tools, especially brushes. Again, having the right tools for your paint job is essential in getting the right results.

If you do not want to bother about these details and you just want to make sure that you will get a good paint job, then you should hire a proven painting contractor. A professional painting contractor would know which tools to use right away.
